OFFICE FACILITIES EXPANSION OF MOTOR INSURERS’ FUND

An integral part of growing a business’ operation is the necessity of expanding its office space size.

Motor Insurers’ Fund (M.I.F.) understood this necessity, and in collaboration with Christos Minas Architects L.L.C., we worked on their office facilities expansion in Nicosia, Cyprus, as one of our latest projects.

The project involves the design and construction of a new, four-storey, reinforced concrete building, with two basement parking floors adjacent to the existing one. Due to specific architectural demands, the structural body of the building has been designed in a manner that an unobscured view from two sides is fully achieved. Moreover, a bridge has been designed on the 1st floor to connect the new structure to the existing one. Due to the significant excavation depth, and since other structures are located nearby, a ‘Berlin wall system’ has been used to satisfy soil stability and structural integrity of surrounding structures during the construction stage.

The load-bearing system comprises a mixed frame–wall structural system with walls of a significant length in both directions. Designed as an office-facilities building, relevant loads have been applied according to Eurocodes, and all current design requirements regarding earthquake resistance have been met.

The study has been performed by utilizing ‘Building Information Modeling’, in which Structural Engineers, Architects, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers work and collaborate on a common three-dimensional model. Working on the same platform is accompanied by certain benefits, while the three-dimensional representation features that BIM offers make the interaction with the client more targeted and effective.

At Platonas Stylianou & Associates Civil and Structural Engineers L.L.C, we strongly support innovation in any form, especially during the design process, and undoubtedly, ‘Building Information Modeling’ with its features and capabilities is part of this.
